Apr 21 - Community Message

Hello JLS Families,

We hope your week is going smoothly, especially since this week we have been working through CAASPP testing and dealing with the unexpected interruptions due to Schoology outages. This can be a stressful time of year, and we greatly appreciate your patience and flexibility as you support our students at home.

This morning we had about 80 parents join our Principal Chat/Coffee to hear about current JLS news, as well as learn about an upcoming event called International Day (coming Wednesday, May 19).  Please check out our slide deck.  Our next Principal Chat will be Wednesday, May 5 at 8:30-9:20 AM. Please use this Zoom Link to join our conversation:

This afternoon, we had several students and a few parent volunteers repurpose mugs and plant succulents in honor of Earth Day (which, officially is tomorrow). We'll also have information about Safe Routes to School and pedestrian and cyclist routes coming out to students tomorrow to coincide with Earth Week. Thank you for your support and involvement in these green initiatives!

Bell Schedule Survey Deadline: Thursday, April 22 at 11:59 PM
The Bell Schedule Committee has identified three possible bell schedule structures for all of the secondary schools to use next year (2021-22). The committee is currently gathering input from all stakeholders regarding the structure of the bell schedule to inform the design phase.

Please Note: The example schedules provided in the survey are there to give you an idea of the structures of schedules currently being considered. Please fill out the survey by midnight (11:59 PM) on Thursday, April 22. Link for Students/Parents:

Final Materials Distribution Day: Friday, April 23
Parents of students who need to pick up materials will be contacted via email by noon tomorrow.  Please note, this final Materials Distribution day is designed for students who are currently Distance Learning.  If you have a Distance Learning Student, please come to the JLS Gym at one of the following times:

  • 8:00-9:00 AM
  • 10:00-11:00 AM
  • 3:00-4:00 PM

Please ask your child about their “Student Distribution Checklist” that they should have filled out online for all their classes. The items that we are planning to distribute on Friday include:

  • 6th “Wheel” Materials for certain classes
  • Packets or Novels for some classes
  • Overdue library books

If you can’t join one of the times on Friday, the gym will be open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM next week.

We are currently designing Materials Return Dates for the first week of June. Please stay tuned for more information.

CAASPP Testing is scheduled to continue Monday, April 26 with a special schedule.  Please remember that most students are testing online with their Advisory classes.

7th and 8th Grade Students: Increase of In-Person Opportunities
Starting Tuesday, April 27, our 7th and 8th grade students will be able to join all of their classes in-person all four days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) if they wish to. Students will no longer be assigned to alphabetical groupings for Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday/Friday, and may attend any day of their choosing. If your student has not yet attended in person, please remember to fill out the Parent Square Health Screener every day they attend. While students may select days they wish to attend, they must attend the entire day and always complete the health screener or ParentSquare before school each day.

Take-Home COVID Tests April 27
Last week, we started take-home test kits for in-person students.  Last Thursday during Check-In, students were offered a test kit along with a printed copy of the School Test Requisition Form.

Before completing the test, parents had to first register and complete the Online Consent Form

These are the instructions for how to complete the take-home test.
Many students chose to participate in this optional testing and they returned their test kit, along with the Requisition Form, on Friday, April 16 for processing by Predicine. (Parents were informed of test results by Predicine, not PAUSD).

We expect to have three future dates for test kit distribution: Tuesday, April 27, Thursday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 25. We are alternating between Tuesdays and Thursdays to provide this opportunity to all groups of in-person students at JLS.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact JLS Health Technician, Carol Cannon, Phone: (650) 856-5178

You can also find a quick guide to the instructions in EnglishSpanishMandarin, and Vietnamese
