Apr 28 - Community Message
Hello JLS Families,
I hope your week is going well. Today we saw the largest number of in-person students so far: 424! (This includes our 187 Hybrid 6th grade students and our 237 7th and 8th grade students). If your child is either at home or in-person, I hope that their week is going well and they are feeling like there is a clear path for them to take towards the end of our school year. It’s hard to believe we have less than six weeks to go!
7th and 8th Grade Students ~ Increase for In-Person Opportunities:
As of yesterday, Tuesday, April 27, our 7th and 8th grade students are able to return for four full days (Tuesday-Friday) of in-person instruction. Students no longer have to be assigned to alphabetical groupings for Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday/Friday, and may attend any day of their choosing. If your student has not yet attended in person, please remember to fill out the Parent Square Health Screener before each day they attend. While students may select days they wish to between Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, they must always have their Health Screener completed by their parent/guardian, wear their masks and student ID, and attend the entire day.
Today’s FREE Parent Education Event:
"Parenting Through the Pandemic: What's Next" through Common Sense Media streamed live today at Noon, and featured Dr. Madeline Levine. Topics included anxiety, resilience, social media, and rules for tech use, and the session was intended for parents of children of all ages. All PAUSD parents can view a recording of the session by registering through Common Sense Media website.
Progress Reports Available Friday, April 30:
Progress Reports will be viewable on Infinite Campus on Friday, April 30. Teachers have been working to enter grades into Infinite Campus for students and families to view by the end of the day on Friday, April 30, 2021. If you have questions about any of the grade marks that your student receives, please contact their teacher directly. For information about the Infinite Campus system, please visit the PAUSD help page.
8th Grade Conversations = Monday, May 3, 2021:
Prior to last year, JLS had a long-standing tradition of 8th Grade Exit Interviews. Since we are not able to hold these interviews in-person this year, we are shifting our approach to online Zoom meetings that include all JLS staff members through individual reflective conversations. In order to make time and space for this special event, ALL JLS students will have a purely asynchronous day on Monday, May 3. 6th and 7th grade students must log into Schoology to access their assignments and be counted for attendance, and 8th grade students will join a reflective conversation with members of the JLS staff team at a specific time. 8th grade families should have received a specific appointment time and zoom link through this letter (template) earlier today.
Upcoming Principal Chat, Wednesday, May 5 at 8:30 AM:
Our next Principal Chat will be Wednesday, May 5 at 8:30-9:20 AM. Topics will likely center around End of Year Activities. Please use this Zoom Link to join our conversation: https://pausd.zoom.us/j/99873767585
8th Grade Promotion & End-Of-Year Activities:
As we navigate the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we have observed the guidelines and protocols that continue to be released. At this time, we remain committed to providing our students with positive educational experiences outside of the regular school day in alignment with current safety protocols.
With improving conditions, we are excited to be able to open up opportunities that have not been available since the start of the pandemic. As we plan for the end-of-year activities, it is important to remember the priority of student, family, staff, and community health and safety. Many of the activities and events that contribute to the middle school experience fall under the category of extra-curricular, and benefit various groups of students. At this point, we want to ensure that the 8th grade class of 2021 is able to experience the one event that celebrates all of our eight-graders and their educational experiences thus far--promotion.
We are pleased to convey that some small-scale events and activities that align to state and county safety protocols will be supported by our school. As conditions shift, we anticipate there may be changes in the parameters or guidelines that must be followed for any school-supported event. When activities are approved, we will provide the most current guidelines that will need to be followed.
As has previously been communicated, an in-person promotion ceremony remains our biggest priority, in hopes that the 8th grade class of 2021 can enjoy this important tradition. We will not be entertaining other events this year to ensure our students remain healthy and are able to participate in their promotion ceremony.
Take-Home COVID Tests were available at JLS Tuesday, and will be back again Thursday, May 13. Every other week, students are able to take home COVID testing kits and will be asked to return the kit to the school site the next day (before 12:20p). The take home schedule for the COVID-19 kits can be found here.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message from JLS. If you have questions, please reach out to any member of our staff team.
