Jan 13 - Return to Learn Community Message

Good Evening JLS Families,

I hope this first full week of school finds you and your student doing well.  This message contains many short updates and some reminders which are very JLS specific, and there are some general updates from PAUSD near the bottom. Also, here is School Connect's parent handout from today's Advisory Lesson "Making the Most of Your Time."  I hope you find this communication helpful.

Last Wednesday’s Professional Learning provided our staff with new instructional ideas from Catlin Tucker (Blended Learning) and wellness approaches from Roni Habib (EQ Schools), as well as a lot of sharing of best practices from within our JLS staff.  We had over 20 presenters from inside our staff team share their ideas and expertise with colleagues.  This spirit of collaboration is something that we take great pride in, and as we are finding the groove with our second semester of distance learning, this inspiration helps everyone to keep moving forward.

Grades for Semester One: Grades are now viewable to students and parents through Infinite Campus.  I encourage you to review your student’s grades and consider their growth and development over the first half of this (unique) school year.  I recommend you and your student reflect on their accomplishments as well as their opportunities for improvement.  If you have questions about a particular grade, please contact the classroom teacher.

JLS Principal Coffee/Chats: Today we had about 70 parents join our Principal Chat.  We shared information about Health Connected, Transition Dates for 20-21, and reminded everyone of our PTA Association Meeting next week. Here is today’s Slide Deck.

  • Our next Principal Chat is Wednesday, January, 20 at 8:30-9:20 AM.  It will cover a recent Math Assessment called the MDTP.  To join that meeting, please use this Zoom Link:
  • Previous Principal Chats are archived on the JLS Website here

Looking ahead to next week, please note that Monday, January 18, 2021 is a school holiday, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.  In addition to enjoying the three-day weekend, I wanted you to know that JLS Counselors will be posting optional activities to learn about Dr. King on Schoology.

Looking For More Social Connections? JLS counselors have designed additional social events for our students, including an optional “Zoom with Friends” on Tuesdays at Lunch, and a Newcomers Breakfast (for students new to PAUSD) on Friday, January 22. If your student is looking for other peers to meet and potential friends to make, we also have our second Club Faire taking place on Wednesday, January 20.  Last semester we had about 20 clubs that hosted different sized groups of students (some as large as 40+), and next Wednesday, our Club Faire will launch 18 clubs for JLS students to consider joining.

During Next Tuesday’s PAUSD Board Meeting, the JLS Bond Project Team will be presenting JLS’s construction proposals for the Board of Trustees to consider.  After many meetings with our School Site Council, we are looking forward to the possibility of a new Library, a new Wellness Center and a new Administration Building. If you are interested in learning more about these proposals, please look at the Board Docs (to be published this coming Friday) or tune into the PAUSD School Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

I know there is a lot of information to process these days, so I greatly appreciate you taking the time to read this message.  I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy.  In the meantime, if you are looking for free COVID Testing, Lana Conaway, Assistant Superintendent, asked me to share the following websites with all of you:

Take care and stay safe,
