Principal's Update: Covid Test Kits and Friday Minimum Day Schedule

Hello JLS Families, I hope this message finds you well, and I hope you and your loved ones are healthy.  Many of us are still getting used to the option of wearing masks indoors as well as outdoors at school, but I hope that you are comfortable in your choice and we all can accept and respect the choices of others.  We are optimistic that this easing of masking is a sign of better things to come.   We will be having a Community Zoom this Friday, April 1, 2022 at 8:45 AM to present the information in this message, but I wanted you to have these updates on your radar:

  • COVID Test Kits Distributed Today (March 30, 2022)
  • Parent Ed Tonight @ 7:00 PM (March 30, 2022)
  • Ramadan (April 2 to May 2, 2022)

Friday, Minimum Day – JLS Students Dismissed @ 12:40 PM Friday, April 1, 2022 is a Minimum Day to jump-start our upcoming Spring Break! Students will be dismissed at 12:40 PM.  Students can pick up a ‘Grab-n’ Go’ lunch on their way off-campus if needed.  Here’s our schedule: NEW TODAY! COVID Test Kits for Every JLS Student and Staff Member:   COVID test kits were delivered to all PRIME classrooms today (Wednesday, March 30). Every JLS student and staff member was to receive two test kits (2 boxes) today.  These kits are different than what we have distributed before; this time, each student and staff member will receive two boxes containing one test kit (see picture below).   These test kits are provided with Spring Break in mind.  As more travel and social functions will be taking place, these tests should be used one day prior to returning to school after the Spring Break (April 10, 2022). The second test is to be administered two to three days after returning from the Spring Break between April 13, 2022 or April 14, 2022. Ramadan 2022, Please Be Aware:   Ramadan 2022 begins on April 2 and lasts through May 2.  Ramadan is scheduled on the lunar calendar so the dates adjust each year (last year Ramadan was observed from April 13 to May 13). Ramadan is the Muslim month of fasting.  Practicing Muslim students, staff, and community members will be fasting from dawn until dusk (approximately 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM).  Fasting means NO FOOD and NO WATER. Ramadan celebrations often involve prayer late into the night.  It is not unusual to be up past midnight for prayer and then up again at 3:30-4 AM to eat before dawn and pray. Muslim students, staff, and community members may be tired, hungry, and dehydrated.  Please be aware, thoughtful, mindful, and kind.  Please feel free to reach out to your counselor or administrator if you have any special concerns, questions, or if we can be a support. Quarter 3 Progress Grades Available on Infinite Campus: As of last Friday, March 25, students and families are able to check Infinite Campus to view their Reports for our Third Quarter grades.  To check your child’s grades, please log in to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and select your child’s name.  You should be able to view Third Quarter Grade Information.  Please keep in mind that the grades listed are indicators of a student’s progress through the second semester.  If you haven’t already done so, please consider having a conversation with your student about how their classes are going; ask them what they are learning about, what they enjoy, and how they might want to improve before the end of our school year. If you have any questions regarding the academic progress, please contact your child’s teacher directly. Spring Break Reminders: Our last major school break is finally here, which indicates that the end of the school year is just around the corner.  School and school offices will be closed Monday, April 4 - Friday, April 8 for Spring Break.  Teachers and staff will also be relaxing, recharging, and disconnected, as we hope that you are too.  If you’re looking for fun ideas for Spring Break Activities, check out our recent edition of Paw Prints, the JLS Digital Newspaper.  Staff and students will return to school on Monday, April 11, 2022.  Please have fun, connect with yourself and your family and friends, and most importantly, stay safe. Thank you for your continued interest, involvement, and support of our school.  If you’re looking for more information, we have a Community Zoom Scheduled for Friday, April 1, 2022 at 8:45 AM.  If you would like to tune in, please join us via this Zoom Link.  Our Slide Deck will be made available and a recording will be shared on our school website in the next few days.   If you have any questions, please reach out to any member of the JLS team.   Warm regards, Chris Grierson, JLS Principal ( Additional Contact Information: Donna Hankins, 6th Grade Counselor ( Kim Lohse, 6th Grade Administrator ( Arvind Arya, 7th Grade Counselor ( Jeff Downing, 7th Grade Administrator ( Adriana Flores-Ragade, 8th Grade Counselor ( Hanisi Accetta, 8th Grade Administrator ( Carol Cannon, JLS Health Tech ( Jamey Boccio, JLS Attendance Secretary (
