Nov 11 - Learning Model Selection for Parents

The following message has been sent to parents with a link for each student.

Palo Alto Unified School District will offer options of either hybrid (in-person) or full distance (at-home) learning beginning January 2021 for middle and high school students. Parents/Guardians must select the learning model for their child no later than November 18th at 5:00pm. The choice is binding through the end of the school year. This is the official selection commitment.

Learning Models
Regardless of the model chosen, teacher/class assignments will need to be adjusted based on enrollment, staffing, and the learning model choices made by each family. Efforts will be made to maintain current teachers and minimize the shuffling of classes.

The second semester bell schedule is changed to accommodate a longer lunch so students can transition between their hybrid (on-campus) and distance (at home) classes. The Monday schedule may undergo additional revisions prior to the start of the new semester. Revisions will be applied uniformly for both instructional learning models.

Distance Learning Instructional Model
For grades six through twelve, the distance learning instructional model will offer a continuation of daily live interaction between students and their teachers. Students selecting this model will receive all of their instruction online following the same bell schedule as those in the hybrid model.

Hybrid Instructional Model – Grade 6
This hybrid instructional model will offer a combination of in-person and at-home learning. Students selecting this model will be assigned to a cohort ranging in size from roughly 30 to 60 students with 2-4 teachers. On campus, in-person learning will happen daily, with Tuesdays and Thursdays being half days, and Wednesdays and Fridays being full days. Students selecting this model will receive all of their instruction following the same bell schedule as those in the distance learning model.

Hybrid Instructional Model – Grades 7-8
This hybrid instructional model will offer a combination of in-person and at-home learning. Students selecting this model will be assigned to a cohort of roughly 45 students with 3 teachers. On campus, in-person learning will take place only in the morning for English-Language Arts, History-Social Science, and Science. Students will participate in their remaining classes via distance learning after lunch. Students selecting this model will receive all of their instruction following the same bell schedule as those in the distance learning model.

Hybrid Instructional Model – Grades 9-12
This hybrid instructional model will offer a combination of in-person and at-home learning. Students selecting this model will be assigned to a cohort for on campus, in-person learning. In-person instruction will take place in English and History-Social Science classes during one of three possible period blocks (1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, or 6th & 7th). Students will participate in their remaining classes via distance learning. Cohorts may range from 30-60 students with 2-4 teachers. Students selecting this model will receive all of their instruction following the same bell schedule as those in the distance learning model.
