Oct 14 - Return to Learn Community Message

Hello JLS Families!

There is a lot going on, and I hope your student is having a totally rad 80’s week!  Many teachers and staff are celebrating the 80s through fashion and music, and tomorrow at lunch we have a fun Gen Z Trivia Game for staff to compete and for students to enjoy live through KJLS.  For more information, please have your student check out the “JLS Events” Schoology Group page (Access Code: QMQ6-ZWZV-CZMK5).

This morning, Megan Warter, JLS Psychologist and I had a parent network meeting to present information about Special Education at JLS During Distance Learning.  Here is the presentation.  Our next Parent Network Meeting will be for 6th Grade Families at JLS on Wednesday, October 21 at 8:30 AM.  More information will come out this Friday and through our PTA’s eNews on Sunday.

The rest of this email message contains updates regarding several upcoming JLS events.  I hope you find it helpful.

Grades for First Quarter Viewable Friday, October 16: JLS teachers have been working to enter Quarter Grades into Infinite Campus for families to view by the end of the day on Friday, October 16.  If you have questions about any of the grade marks that your student receives, please contact their teacher directly.  For information about the Infinite Campus system, please visit the PAUSD help page.

Mark your calendars, next Wednesday, October 21 is Unity Day.  JLS will celebrate Unity Day in partnership with PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, to come together in one giant ORANGE message of hope and support. WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to color our nation, and even the world, to visibly show that our society believes no child should ever experience bullying. Read the history on Wikipedia.  JLS Counselors are in the process of finalizing some fun events to promote inclusive Upstanders who help promote our school's anti-bullying efforts.

A message from Jason Krolikowski, PAUSD Director of Student Services:

For years, our society justified bullying with expressions, such as, “Bullying is a natural part of childhood,” “Some kids just deserve to be bullied,” or “Bullying is a rite of passage.” The goal of the day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community.

We recognize that creating a climate of respect and inclusion on our campus is more than just a one-day event and we will implement year-round activities to build our culture where everyone is valued and appreciated and kindness is the expectation. Please consider partnering with us by talking with your student’s about this important topic and supporting the message of Unity.”

JLS Library Book Distribution Adding More Times: Grab‘n’Go, our JLS school library book circulation service is expanding!  In addition to Wednesday mornings 8 - 9 AM, a new time slot - Thursdays 3:15-4:15 PM - has been added to give borrowers a second option for picking up and returning books.  This additional time will start on Thursday, October 22.  As always, students should make sure they receive PAUSD email confirmation before visiting campus and once on campus should follow all safety protocols.  Details are found here.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Michael Ambrose, JLS Librarian, at

Important Reminders About Visiting the JLS Campus:

  • Visits are still made by appointment only.  Please either email a JLS staff member or call the Office at 650-856-5188 to schedule a time to come to our campus.
  • While on campus, everyone needs to adhere to social distancing guidelines.  Please stay at least 6 feet apart from other individuals.
  • Individuals will need to wear masks while on campus.
  • Individuals must leave campus immediately after their appointment is complete.  No socializing or loitering on campus is allowed.

In case you missed it, here is PAUSD’s Superintendent Update: October 9.  There is a lot of information coming out all the time.

We are sensitive to the fact that families may be inundated with information coming from the school sites and district. In order to focus on the most pertinent information, I will be sending JLS’s next community-wide message out on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

Thank you,

Chris Grierson, JLS Principal (
