Charge those Chromebooks! (uPAR Reading Assessment @ PRIME, Wednesday, Sept. 21)

Hello JLS Families!

All five secondary schools in PAUSD (JLS, Greene, Fletcher, Gunn and Paly) continue to explore and expand support for struggling readers in the upper grade levels. To provide JLS teachers with insights into the literacy needs of their students, all JLS students in grades 6-8 will complete the Universal Protocol for Accommodations in Reading (uPAR) on September 21, 2022 during their PRIME class.

Please help your child prepare for tomorrow by charging their Chromebook tonight. Students will need to bring headphones and a fully-charged school computer to school tomorrow, Wednesday, September 21, 2022.

The uPAR is a screener that evaluates a student’s reading and determines if a reading accommodation would help students to better access the curriculum. Students independently read a passage silently to determine their reading level and comprehension skills. Next, they read a passage accompanied by a human-audio voice and then a computer-generated voice to determine the effect on reading level and comprehension with these two types of interventions.

Teachers will use information from the uPAR to make adjustments to their teaching to support student learning. The information will also help students determine where they might need to develop their literacy skills during this school year.  This screening assessment will not impact students' grades or English placement.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teachers.

Thank you!
